Transforming Tomorrow: Every Student, Every Day

August 29, 2025

“Without people, all you have is an empty building.”

Dear Fair Lawn Families,

Welcome back to another year of possibilities at Fair Lawn Public Schools. As I write this letter, I’m reminded of something that stopped me cold this summer: “Far too many schools have forgotten that without people, all you have is an empty building.” For months, our schools sat quiet, waiting. But today, as we prepare to welcome back your children, those empty buildings are about to come alive again—not because of brick and mortar, but because of the people who fill them with purpose and possibility.

A Fresh Look, Same Strong Foundation We are excited to share that this year marks the introduction of a new visual identity that captures who we are and where we’re headed. Through the voices of hundreds of students, staff, parents, and community members who contributed to its development, our new district logo and brand honor Fair Lawn’s rich history while unifying all our schools under one inspiring mission: Learners Today, Leaders Tomorrow.

Our launch video showcases the dedication and spirit that drives our district forward, embodying our commitment that Fair Lawn Leads the Way in educational excellence: Inspiring Possibilities, Empowering Excellence — Every Student, Every Day.

Safety First: New Traffic Patterns for Student Well-Being Creating safe environments around our schools remains our top priority. This year, we’re implementing new traffic patterns for student drop-off and pick-up at both Memorial Middle School and Thomas Jefferson Middle School. These changes, which have been coordinated in partnership with the Fair Lawn Police Department, are designed to improve safety and reduce congestion during busy arrival and dismissal times.

Your building principals have shared detailed information about these new patterns, including maps and timing guidelines. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the Fair Lawn Police Department and Borough for their ongoing partnership in keeping our students safe. Our district security and facilities teams, along with building administration, have worked tirelessly to implement these improved systems.

Most importantly, these changes will only succeed with your cooperation and partnership. Safety is a shared responsibility, and it will take all of us working together to accomplish our goal of providing the safest possible environment for your children. Your active involvement in these safety measures empowers you and reinforces your role in our community. Thank you in advance for your patience as we implement these significant improvements.

Our District Goals: Progress That Matters This year, we’ve established three clear district goals with community input that will guide our work:

Goal 1: Empowering Pathways to Excellence – Unlocking every student’s unique potential for achievement through flexible scheduling, intervention support, and personalized learning approaches that recognize there’s no one-size-fits-all path to success.

Goal 2: Cultivating Belonging & Community – Creating environments where everyone thrives together through community climate assessments, inclusive access initiatives, and thoughtful technology guidelines that balance digital engagement with human connection.

Goal 3: Building Sustainable Foundations – Developing infrastructure that supports our vision through strategic facilities improvements and professional development that recognizes our educators and staff as the most critical infrastructure of all.

September: Our Second January Like many of you, we make New Year’s resolutions twice a year—in January and in September, our “second January.” I recognize that returning to school comes with mixed emotions. Part of you may be sad to see summer’s freedom come to an end. But I know another part of you feels that familiar excitement, hope, and anticipation for what lies ahead.

That tension between where we’ve been and where we’re going isn’t conflict—it’s potential energy about to be released. As I shared with our staff, progress isn’t a luxury; it’s a psychological necessity. The days we make meaningful progress are the days when we feel our best, and that’s true for our students, staff, and families alike. Our commitment to progress remains unwavering, filling us with optimism and hope for the future.

Our Promise to You This year, you can expect us to see possibilities where others might see problems, to make progress when others make excuses, and to never break our chain of belief in your child’s potential. We are here to support and nurture your child’s growth, and we believe in their ability to make a positive impact. Every day your child shows up, they have the power to be someone’s turning point—and we have the privilege of being part of that transformation.

The strength and unity of our community continue to inspire us. Here in Fair Lawn, collaboration isn’t just a concept—it’s how we operate, always prioritizing our students’ well-being. Your active involvement and support are integral to our success. Together, we cultivate an environment where teaching and learning become opportunities to inspire and transform.

Looking Ahead As we approach the first day of school on Tuesday, September 2nd, excitement is building throughout our district. Our dedicated team has spent the summer enhancing programs, updating curriculum, improving facilities, and strengthening school safety measures. Their commitment forms the foundation that supports a bright future for our students.

Before the school bells ring, take a moment to enjoy these final days of summer. When September arrives, we’ll be ready to begin another year of progress, growth, and achievement together.

Thank you for your invaluable partnership. Our progress is a shared achievement, made possible by your unwavering support. Here’s to a fresh start filled with opportunity and growth as we transform tomorrow, every student, every day.

All my best,

Dr. Rui Dionisio
