A Picture-Perfect Start to the Year

We visited every school this week and saw something special at each stop. Our youngest learners took those significant first steps into preschool and kindergarten. Elementary kids came back ready for adventure with wide-eyed wonder. Our middle schoolers demonstrated remarkable maturity as they adapted to new schedules and classroom expectations, while our high school students embraced leadership roles, helping younger peers find their way.
Our students’ smiles at each stop tell just part of the story. Our custodians and facilities team had every school and classroom ready and welcoming. Food service staff greeted students with warm meals and even warmer smiles. Bus drivers ensured everyone arrived safely at their destinations. And our secretaries, nurses, and support staff—they’re the ones who made sure every child felt they belonged the second they walked through our doors.
What struck us most this week was how seamlessly everyone embraced our new routines. The traffic pattern improvements at Memorial Middle School and Thomas Jefferson Middle School exceeded expectations, thanks to the cooperation and flexibility of everyone involved. We watched our students step up and handle new procedures like they’d been doing them for years. Teachers jumped right into trying new approaches that connect to what we’re working toward as a district, and our support staff made sure no student fell through the cracks.
This successful first week reinforces our belief that when people come together with a shared purpose, extraordinary things happen. The unity and collaboration we’ve seen have established the foundation for a year of growth, discovery, and achievement.
As we witnessed throughout the week, progress isn’t always dramatic. Sometimes it’s a shy student raising their hand for the first time, a new teacher confidently leading their first lesson, or a family feeling truly welcomed by their school community. Every moment matters, and this week was full of them.
